March All Ways

Age: Kindergarten

Equipment: None

Space requirements: On-the-spot

Activity Description:

  • Have children march on the spot.
  • Ask a series questions that have a “Yes” or “No” answer. For example, “Have you ever gone swimming?”, “Do you have a brother?”, “Do you like the colour blue?”).
  • Each time a child answers “Yes” to a question, they perform a quarter turn and continue to move on the spot while facing the new direction.
  • The movement changes based on how many turns they have done from their original position:

1/4 turn = running on the spot

1/2 turn = stride jumps

3/4 turn = walking with high knees

Skill development:

  • Physical skills: marching; running; changing direction; balancing
  • Non-physical skills: processing information; critical thinking; recognizing fractions

Adjust the challenge:

  • Children continue to march on the spot regardless of how many times they turn.
